The town of Orvieto is located in the south- western Umbria, in the province of Terni , bordered to the east by the province of Perugia and south with the province of Viterbo in the Lazio region .

Orvieto is located on a tuff cliff overlooking the valley of the Paglia River , a tributary of the Tiber, and that just beneath the city receives from the left Chiani , the Roman Chiana from the Val di Chiana.

This huge mesa tufa , which rises from twenty to fifty meters from the level of the campaign, is due to the collapse of ground Sourge ( clouds and glowing avalanches ) by Quaternary volcanic system Volsinio , today home to the wreck of the caldera volcanic lake largest in Europe , to Bolsena.

Whole of Etruscan archaeological evidence , provided by excavations and studies conducted over the last few years , offer a fairly reliable , although still incomplete , the ancient city, identified after much uncertainty and controversy among etruscologists in the city of Velzna , one of the twelve Etruscan city-state .

Called by the Romans " Volsinii " stood near a famous Etruscan sanctuary , Fanum Voltumnae , visited each year of the inhabitants of Etruria, who came together to celebrate religious rites, games and events .

The city had , from the eighth to the sixth century BC, a remarkable economic development , which mainly benefited wealthy families in a highly oligarchic regime , and a population increase in the composition of the population , shows an openness to a multi-ethnic city , of everything you have feedback from the remains of the city on the cliff and mainly from the nearby necropolis.

The city reached its zenith between the sixth and fourth centuries BC , becoming a thriving commercial and artistic center , with a military supremacy guaranteed by its strategic location which gave it the appearance of a natural fortress .

TOUR PROGRAMM

  •  ORVIETO
  •  CIVITA DI BAGNOREGGIO

Lunch stop at the customer's expense.

Each additional hour to the fee will be charged in Total at a cost of Euro 50.00 per hour.

After Orvieto we will go to Civita di Bagnoregio, the city is located in a secluded, is only accessible through a pedestrian bridge in reinforced concrete built in 1965 .

The bridge can be crossed only on foot , but recently the town of Bagnoregio , meeting the needs of those who live and   work in this place, has issued a circular stating that , at certain times , residents and authorized persons can cross the bridge at the edge of cycles and motorcycles .

The cause of his isolation is the gradual erosion of the hill and the surrounding valley , which gave rise to the typical forms of gullies and that continues today , threatening to wipe out the village, so also called " the dying city " or , more rarely , " the dying town " .

Currently inhabited by twelve people , Civita was founded 2500 years ago by the Etruscans .

The ancient village of Civita is accessed through five doors, but now that the door of Santa Maria or the Quarry , is the only access to the country .

The urban structure of the entire town is of Etruscan origin , consisting of thistles and decumani according to the use Etruscan and Roman , while the entire architectural coating is medieval and renaissance .

There are numerous testimonies of the Etruscan phase of Civita , especially in the area known as San Francesco old , because in the cliff below the viewpoint of San Francesco old was found a small necropolis etrusca.La morphology of this area was caused by erosion and by landslides .
