Ostia derives its name from Ostium, the mouth of the river. And 'here, in fact, that once the Tiber ended its course before jumping in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a time much closer.

A flood occurred in 1575, then, also changed the course of the river sacred to the Romans, who by that time was curved northward shifting its course of about two kilometers.

The legend dates the foundation of the city, the first colony of the Romans and first river port in Italy, the fourth king of Rome, the Sabine Anco Marzio.

The tradition, however, is not supported by archaeological research, which revealed a fortified citadel, the castrum, dating from the fourth century BC

And its characteristic of cities and commercial links between important roads (Tiber and Tirreno) with the capital of the ancient world, has meant that Ostia, initially equal to and perhaps even more of Rome itself, was a cosmopolitan city, where inside coexisted different races and cultures.

Its inhabitants were, depending on the profession, grouped in associations, with different languages and religions. I am witness to the temples dedicated to local deities as well, to Mithras (Persian), Cybele (Phrygian), Isis (Egyptian). Recently is the discovery of a synagogue.

The excavations of Ostia Antica begin the realization at the beginning of 1800, under Pius VII, continued with Pius IX, and in 1909, with the first and Vaglieri Paribeni stocking and then started on a continuous basis and with the scientific method.

Today you dig again, but much has already been done, and the ancient Ostia reappears in the eyes of the modern visitor. Is probably after Pompeii, the best example of Roman towns comes down to us.

The whole area of high lazio is characterized by the ancient Etruscan civilization , you can visit the Necropolis of Cerveteri, as well as that of Tarquinia.

The  museum of Etruscan Tarquinia and Cerveteri. The last one isoverlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and is located 42 km away from Rome .

From Cerveteri leads to the Etruscan necropolis of Sorbo and the Etruscan necropolis of Banditaccia , one of the most monumental necropolis in the Mediterranean Sea , which was declared in 2004 by UNESCO, along with that of Tarquinia , a world heritage site .

Previously known as Caere . Its modern name comes from Caere Vetus , so called in the thirteenth century to distinguish it from Caere Novum (the current Ceri) . Other ancient place names of the city are Cisra ( the Etruscans ) , Agylla , Άγυλλα ( for the Greeks ).

The city of Cerveteri has a long history , probably dating back to the mid-ninth century BC, as some archaeological excavations have revealed that they have allowed us to ascertain the presence of stable employment in the area with settlements and related Etruscan.
